Kano State has been shaken by the tragic killing of one-year-old Sakina Mamuda, and swift action by the Department of State Services (DSS) has brought hope that justice will prevail. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has commended the agency for arresting five suspects connected to the heartbreaking incident in Duhun Bake village, Gwarzo Local Government Area.
The Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, revealed in a Thursday statement that the suspects kidnapped the infant, demanded ransom, and later killed her in a disturbing act of cruelty. Her body was found dumped in an abandoned open well, sending shockwaves through the community.
The accused—Zailani Rabiu, Hafizu Yusuf, Abubakar Abdulkareem, Umar Lawan, and Amadu Salisu—are all members of the same community, a detail that has intensified public outrage. They are now being held for criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder.
At a press conference held in Kano, Attorney General Haruna Dederi and top state officials reiterated that the government will pursue the case with urgency and ensure that the culprits face the full wrath of the law.
Governor Yusuf, visibly affected by the crime, extended gratitude to the DSS and all security agencies involved. He also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to boost security capacity through improved intelligence, logistics, and inter-agency coordination.
“This act of pure evil has deeply wounded our hearts,” Governor Yusuf said. “I applaud the DSS for acting without delay. We owe it to our people to never let such acts go unpunished.”
The murder has sparked outrage far beyond Gwarzo, with citizens calling for fast-tracked prosecution and stiffer penalties for anyone who targets innocent children.
